PRESIDENT'S CORNER

Hello Neighbors!
As you’re likely already aware, RCNA events have started happening again! I couldn’t be any more thrilled about that. Our first monthly game night was a hit and the July 4th car parade was at least as good, if not better, than last year. It was so much fun having our County Commissioner, Terry Cook, join us for the first time. She was such a great sport and really seemed to enjoy herself. She had so many nice things to say about our neighborhood and its residents.
Our events team is planning away for our member’s pool party, that will take place August 8th. We’d love to see you all there! Details should be mailed out to members later this week. And our Executive Board and Events committee have gotten the ball rolling on our Rattan Fest planning, but we need your help. It’s a big event, taking place September 11th this year, and usually we’d be planning a lot earlier in the year for this one. But during the early months of 2021, we had no idea what this year was going to bring. Now that we’ve received an all systems go from the MUD, we can certainly use more volunteers. We can use one to two more people on the Events committee, and many more to simply join our general pool of volunteers. You can donate as little or as much time as you like, we’ll appreciate every bit of it! Please contact me at President@RattanCreek.org if you can help out. We’ll also need help with set up and take down on the day of the event, and I’ll get a Sign Up created as the event draws near.
Thanks to our amazing webmaster, Jeff Russom, our new membership system is coming along nicely. Soon you will be able to look up and maintain your own memberships. He’s working hard at getting everyone imported into the system, and soon you should receive an email prompting you to create a new password for yourselves. You will be able to log in using either your assigned initial username or the email address you have listed for your membership.
I’m also pleased to announce that our monthly RCNA meetings are returning to in person starting with our August meeting, on 8/5/21 at 7pm. Please join us back in the Rattan Creek Community Center. I’m so excited to meet some new people and see some familiar faces once again!
It’s an exciting time to be a part of the RCNA, and I’m so thankful to each and every one of you for being a member.

2021 RCNA Member’s Pool Party
Rattan Creek Pool, August 8th, 4-7pm
RCNA Members, come out and enjoy some fun in the sun at the Rattan Creek pool! This is a great opportunity to meet your fellow members and see some old friends, as well. Free food and drink will be provided, and we’ll be raffling off some gift cards for local businesses.
This party is for RCNA members and their immediate families only. You do not need to be members of the RC pool. If you use Facebook, please try to RSVP (“Going”) on the RCNA Facebook page, so we can get a good guess on a headcount for food.
We hope to see you there!

Fitness & Health Corner

No gym? No problem!
Hello, Rattan Creekers – and happy July! I hope you’re having a wonderful summer and staying cool. As we move into a period with more socializing and group gatherings than we’ve had in the past year and a half, I’d like to share with you the best thing that came out of the pandemic for me: getting to know our fantastic neighborhood better than ever!
Rattan Creek has great resources for health and fitness – some accessible from our own backyards! Here is a list of some of my favorite features of our neighborhood.
Hiking/jogging trail: You have probably seen or used this trail if you’ve ever been close to the neighborhood pool or Rattan Creek Park. It’s around 1.15 miles from end-to-end; the north end starts near Parmer behind the Oakville apartments and dead-ends at the woods behind Marimba trail. There are a few small offshoots worth exploring, and there are countless ways to create challenging hiking or running trails that combine the gravel of the path (much gentler on the knees) with shady neighborhood street loops.
Workout stations along the trail: If you’re looking for a great cross-training experience, challenge yourself to try the workout stations positioned along the path in the park. There are pull-up stations, abdominal challenges, agility exercises, and more. You can even take the do-it-yourself approach: one of my favorite exercises is pushups – and if getting on the ground is too difficult, try doing incline pushups – with your hands placed on the back of a park bench.
RCNA facilities: when was the last time you swam laps at the pool? Or dusted off that old tennis racket? While they do require a fee, the Rattan Creek pool and tennis courts are a great way to get some physical activity at a much greater discount than most pools or local tennis clubs.
Improved sidewalks and wide streets: Cycling is a favorite sport in our house. Many of the streets in Rattan Creek are wide and offer a safe way to enjoy low-impact exercise without having to worry about sharing a busy lane with cars. Why not explore the neighborhood and create your own routes –anything from half mile to five-mile loops (but please remember to wear your helmets)! And the recent improvements to Dallas Drive’s sidewalks makes running safer and easier – especially for those of you pushing jogging strollers!
Community! This one is constantly changing – but the best part of exercising in Rattan Creek is interacting with neighbors. I love seeing some of the same runners or walkers (and their dogs!) at various points on my running routes. It’s also inspiring to watch people’s gardens change with the seasons, or enjoy seeing the progress on home improvement projects that many of us have undertaken recently. Exercising in the neighborhood is also a great way to stay in the loop about upcoming events, with handy signs that are often reminding us about bulk pickup, the neighborhood garage sales, swim meets, parades, and more.
There is so much more to love about exercising in Rattan Creek, but I’ll save some for next month. I look forward to seeing you outside – but stay hydrated and please wear sunscreen!

I was the first among my friends to have children. I had no one to talk to about parenting. The internet was still in its infantile stages and social media was just budding in 2003. I turned to chat rooms and online forums to bounce questions. I read books and articles with a highlighter in hand. I would go to the pediatrician’s office with a printed-out list of questions. I was trying my hardest to be the very best mom I could be and at the same time quickly realizing there is no manual or guidebook on how to achieve that. It took nearly two decades of trial, error, mistakes, apologies, patience and more love than I thought anyone had the capacity to give for me to discover that there is no way to be the best parent. There is no absolute right way and there is no map. Every situation, every home and every child is different. I realize now that the best I can do is listen, love and try my best.
Once upon a time in the summer of 2008- I thought I was trying my best. I had signed my three-year-old up for soccer. I have never played soccer. I have never played any sport, to be honest. However, so many of my daughter’s preschool pals were enrolling so I just thought it was the thing to do. I was overjoyed shopping for all the uniform pieces. I made little bows that matched both her jerseys. I bought her a water bottle and hand painted her name on the side. I laid out the tiny uniform on the guest bed and it stayed there on display for a week. I tried my very best to get her excited for her first practice. I bought a soccer book and was determined to play the part of sports mom. The first practice was at 8am on a Saturday. About five minutes into getting ready I realized the day may not go as I imagined. There were tears, from both of us. She didn’t want to go. She didn’t want to wear the bows. She hated the water bottle. Frustrated, I pulled the mom card. We went, she wore the bows and she held her water bottle. They were doing little practice drills and my kid looked at me from across the field with a “do I have to do this” written all over her tiny face. I pulled the mom card. Yes, we were doing this. Every practice was like this, and the games were worse. Soccer was not her thing, and it was very quickly evident it wasn’t mine either. I dreaded those Saturdays, but I played the mom card. We went, and we participated. On one hand, we had started something, and we needed to finish. Right? We owed it to the team….didn’t we? On the other hand, we were both miserable. I was also having to bring along a four-month-old infant to all of these practices and games in the hot Texas summer sun. We were not getting anything out of it, and it felt as though we were sacrificing so much of our weekend-for what? After a month of giving, it our best, we met the coach before practice and told him that sadly we were not going to be there that day or any other day. I thanked him for all his patience and efforts. I gave him donuts. I apologized. I felt so bad. My daughter was elated. It was over. No more soccer.
I worried that I taught her a terrible lesson. I worried for years that I taught her to quit. Now, looking back I realize that I taught her a very valuable lesson and it wasn’t a bad one. It is okay that you don’t like something. It is okay to say so. It is okay to say no and walk away. Like all parenting lessons, not everyone will agree. Some may say that I should have finished out the season and finished what we started. However, I think back to that donut in the car on the way home from that last practice and the conversation. “Well, now we know”, my daughter said from her car seat. “Now we know what?” I replied. “Now we know it is okay to not like something and say so”. Lesson learned. For both of us.
If I had a time machine or a magic postal service, I would send an open letter back to 2003 addressed to myself. I would tell myself not to worry about saving up to buy that diaper bag- I would revert back to a purse within a year. I would tell myself not to stay up late worrying about breast feeding verses bottle feeding and just know that my child would be fed. I would tell myself that they may not like soccer, or dance, or tennis or swimming or any of the things that I dreamed they would. I would tell myself not to compare them with anyone. I would tell myself that they will grow into someone that I can’t even begin to imagine, and it will be delightful to watch. I would tell myself that seeing them becoming who they are will be the joy of my life. I would tell myself that if I listen, love and try my best then that will be enough. I will be enough. I will make mistakes and still be enough.
Happy parenting, y’all!

RCNA’s Monthly Game Night is on!
This is a brand new neighborhood social event, hosted by the RCNA. Each month we will have an open tabletop game night in the Rattan Creek Community Center. Our first event, held on June 30th, was tremendous fun and we cannot wait until the next one. We had a fantastic range of ages and gaming experience, and everyone seemed to have a great time. The best part is that it gives a wonderful opportunity to meet more of your neighbors, and reconnect with friends.
All ages are welcome, but children must be in the company of their parents/guardians. Bring a game of your own, or jump in on a game brought by a neighbor. Feel free to bring your own snacks or drinks, but please note alcohol is not allowed. Masks are highly encouraged for those who remain unvaccinated, per CDC guidelines.
Future game nights will take place the 4th Wednesday of each month from 6-9pm. For more information, see our website: Website or our Facebook Page.
Hope to see you there on July 28th!

The Hurricanes last meet was last Saturday, July 10 – thank you for everyone that came out to support us.
BOY SCOUTS
The Scouting movement in Rattan Creek is alive and well, even through times of COVID-19. Scouting is a great opportunity for our neighborhood youth, both male and female of almost all ages, to participate in a social activity with their peers to learn life lessons and build leadership capabilities. There are several opportunities for various ages in our neighborhood:
Cub Scout Pack 159 – Chartered on October 1, 1971, Pack 159 is one of the older and more established Cub Scout packs in the Northwest Austin area. Many of our scouts attend Pond Springs Elementary or Jollyville Elementary. We welcome scouts and families from all different backgrounds. Pack 159 is open to boys and girls in Kindergarten through 5th grade.
Online: pack159.org | Facebook: facebook.com/pack159tx
Scouts BSA Troop 259 – Troop 259 serves male youth aged from 11 to 17. Many of our Scouts attend from junior high schools such as Deerpark, Grisham, Canyon Vista, Pearson Ranch, and Cedar Valley along with high schools such as McNeil or Westwood. We meet weekly, camp monthly, and attend summer and high adventure camps annually. We are firm believers in giving back to our community through service. You will likely find our Scouts involved in local school and neighborhood activities.
