Hello Neighbors!
Hopefully by now all of our members and Friends of the RCNA supporters have one of our event
door hangers, that were delivered by our wonderful neighborhood volunteers. If you did not
receive one yet and would like to, please shoot a message or email to myself or one of our
other board members and we’ll get one to you ASAP!
The Crawfish Boil was a huge success again this year, as were our two July 4th events! The heat
sure didn’t keep people away, and it was as wonderful as always spending time in the park with
our neighbors.
The volunteers really came forward for these- a trend I would be overjoyed to see continue
going forward. As our events keep growing, we’re definitely going to need more hands on deck
to keep up with that growth. If you have any interest in joining our events team or becoming
part of our general volunteer pool, please let us know. We’ll be reaching out to the community
very shortly to get some additional help for our late summer and fall events. Volunteering is
one of the beast ways to make more friends in the neighborhood and to support the RCNA
events.
In August we have the first annual Chad O. Day approaching, as well as our annual member’s
pool party. More can be found on both of these events later in this newsletter.
We hope to see you there!

Heat Related Emergencies
It appears that summer is finally upon us. That means 90-100 degree temperatures with
high humidity. When these two mix, they can cause major issues for those of us who work and
play outside. The Heat Index (HI) is the temperature the body feels when heat and humidity are
combined. Below is a chart describing the combined effects:
On average, about 175 Americans succumb to the taxing demands of environmental heat
exposure every year. Our bodies dissipate heat by varying the rate and depth of blood circulation
and by losing water through the skin via sweat glands. Sweating cools the body through
evaporation but high relative humidity retards evaporation, robbing the body of its ability to cool
itself. When heat gain exceeds the level the body can remove, body temperature begins to rise
and heat related illnesses may develop. The two issues you need to be aware of are Heat
Exhaustion and Heat Stroke.
Heat Exhaustion is brought on by over exertion in a hot environment without adequate
hydration. Basically, that’s working or playing for a long period of time, without drinking
enough fluids, outside in the Texas summer heat. The body looses fluids via sweating, which
then reduces the body’s ability to cool itself and also reduces blood flow to skeletal muscles.
This can cause the person to become extremely weak, dizzy, nauseous, severe headaches and
their skin may be pink or gray and cool to the touch.
What do you do to correct this? First, move the person to a cooler environment. This can
be an air conditioned building or even just to a shady location with a fan blowing on them. Also,
give modest amounts of fluids such as water or an electrolyte drink (sports drinks like Gatorade).
This will replace the lost body fluids and help the body cool to a normal level. If the patient
doesn’t cool down, Heat Exhaustion can progress into Heat Stroke.
Heat Stroke is the complete failure of the body’s heat regulatory system due to heat
stress. This means that your body has been overheated for so long that it cannot cool itself
anymore. When this happens, the body temperature rapidly rises to life threatening levels. Signs
of this are an altered mental state, hot and dry skin (in some instances, it may be moist), a body
temperature of over 104° and possibly even seizures. This situation is a true emergency. The
first thing you do is dial 911. Next, move the patient to a cooler environment and use
aggressive cooling measures. This includes wet towels and ice packs to the neck, armpits and
groin area to assist the body with cooling. This will help the patient until we can get there to
provide care and EMS can transport them to the hospital.
We all love Austin because of the wide variety of outdoor activities it offers. When you
are enjoying the outdoors during the hot summer months, be sure and take care of yourself. Use
sunscreen, keep cool and drink lots of fluids so you don’t end up calling us and taking a ride with
our good friends, the Williamson County Paramedics.
First Annual Chad O. Day
August 12th; 9-11am
The RCNA is proud to announce that we will be pairing up with the Cpl. Chad Eric
Oligschlaeger Foundation for P.T.S.D., to celebrate the memory of Chad for his birthday and
promote awareness of their foundation.
Please come out to join us on the morning of August 12th, to celebrate our neighborhood's
own Cpl. Chad Eric Oligschlaeger at this remembrance for his birthday. We will be at the
memorial bench, near the Kerrville entrance to the greenbelt, from 9am-11am.
Chad lived here in the neighborhood, and went to McNeil HS. His parents founded the Cpl.
Chad Eric Oligschlaeger Foundation for P.T.S.D. in his honor, and the RCNA is proud to host this
joint event with that Foundation. Come out and learn the story of the Chad Oligschlaeger
Memorial Bench and the Trail of Honor, found along the greenbelt in Rattan Creek park.
We will have art supplies on hand for making birthday cards to Chad, that we will be giving to
his mom at the end of the event. Jollyville Fire will be out to show support and meet the kids.
There will be free Rudy’s breakfast tacos, Round Rock donuts, and coffee & water to enjoy.
If you are unable to attend, you can make a donation to the Foundation at their website:
https://www.cplchado.org/
If you prefer to donate to the Foundation by cash or check, we will be collecting donations at
the event. Or if you are unable to make it, you are welcome to message the RCNA or Christine
Newman to arrange a drop off beforehand. Christine will also be collecting
birthday/remembrance cards leading up to event, if you cannot be there.
This is the first of what we hope will be an annual event, to spread awareness of Chad and the
foundation. Many have sat and enjoyed the bench and the lovely area in the park that is
maintained in Chad’s honor and as a remembrance to all those who have served. Now come
learn what it’s all about and show your support!
RCNA MEMBER'S POOL PARTY
AUGUST 20TH - 4-7PM
RCNA Members, come out and enjoy some fun in the sun at the Rattan

family will receive one free ticket, and additional tickets will be available for
$1 at the event.
This party is for RCNA members and their immediate families only. You do
not need to be members of the Rattan Creek pool. Please RSVP at the

We hope to see you there!

BOY SCOUTS

BOY SCOUTS
The Scouting movement in Rattan Creek is alive and well, even through times of COVID-19. Scouting is a great opportunity for our neighborhood youth, both male and female of almost all ages, to participate in a social activity with their peers to learn life lessons and build leadership capabilities. There are several opportunities for various ages in our neighborhood:
Cub Scout Pack 159 – Chartered on October 1, 1971, Pack 159 is one of the older and more established Cub Scout packs in the Northwest Austin area. Many of our scouts attend Pond Springs Elementary or Jollyville Elementary. We welcome scouts and families from all different backgrounds. Pack 159 is open to boys and girls in Kindergarten through 5th grade.

Scouts BSA Troop 259 – Troop 259 serves male youth aged from 11 to 17. Many of our Scouts attend from junior high schools such as Deerpark, Grisham, Canyon Vista, Pearson Ranch, and Cedar Valley along with high schools such as McNeil or Westwood. We meet weekly, camp monthly, and attend summer and high adventure camps annually. We are firm believers in giving back to our community through service. You will likely find our Scouts involved in local school and neighborhood activities.

The Rattan Creek Hurricanes Swim Club is a family-friendly summer swim team in northwest Austin, Texas. As a member of the Northwest Swim Circuit, our mission is to provide a structured recreational activity that teaches swimmers the value of competition, sportsmanship, teamwork and individual achievement, while they make new friends and get a great workout! Our season runs from May through mid July. Practices take place after school until the school year ends, then we switch to morning practices.
